All levels benefit from an active approach to the development of conversation and listening skills as well as written comprehension, accurate usage and current idiomatic expression. Pragmatic, contextual course modules emphasize the creation of targeted domains of fluency.

Active French Expression 150-S, 250-S
Three semester credits
A series of thematic workshops in French: Conversation, Phonetics, Theater and Creative Writing. Support materials include: Audio, video and local situational excursions. A multimedia language lab is also available for personal use.

• Thematic Conversation
Enrich vocabulary and idiomatic expression through focused conversation on specific topics of current interest: politics, leisure, family, sports, the arts...

• Phonetics
Voice, intonation and pronunciation. Special focus on enunciation and fluidity: French vowels, perception of syllables, accentuation and liaison. Practical exercises include readings, tongue twisters and mouth-toning exercises.

• Theater
Combine verbal and non-verbal expression with exercises in voice and idiom through the rehearsal and production of short lively sketches from French theater.

• Creative Writing
Discover, as Samuel Beckett did, the freshness and liberation of writing in a foreign language. Writing assignments will be based on student’s individual perception of the city of Aix. Find creative expression in the colors, sounds and smells of sidewalk cafés, fountains, tree-lined streets, open-air markets and museums.

Studio Art 352-S: Painting and Drawing
Three semester credits
Taught in English
Experiment in new ways of perceiving light and dark, color, texture and geometric form in nature. Discover, extend and liberate your personal style of artistic expression through an examination of the master painters of Provence. Landscape, still-life, portrait and figure. Local excursions to the motifs of Cezanne and Van Gogh.

 

NON-CREDIT COURSES

Cooking in Season
8 hours of instruction - Taught in French with simultaneous English translation

This hands-on cooking experience will explore easy, creative recipes using fresh local in-season produce. Learn how best to use local herbs such as basil, thyme, bay leaf, rosemary, sage and their role in making Provencal cuisine one of the most delicious and healthful in the world. Learn to make the most appealing traditional dishes and master the little secrets that will turn simple meals at home into something truly special. Booklet of recipes included.

Dynamic, creative, provocative, chef Bruno Ungaro is the author of two popular books on Provencale cuisine, as well as the animator of a weekly radio broadcast. One of the most widely respected chefs of the region, he is called upon to cook for Heads of State.
His restaurant l’Amphitryon, one of the culinary gems of Aix-en-Provence, is regularly praised in gourmet magazines worldwide.

 

 

Wine Tasting
28 hours of instruction - Taught in English

Discover the great wines of France, and refine your sense of taste, smell and perception. Master the language of wine-tasting and learn the specific vocabulary used by professionals. Special focus will be given to wines from the Rhone Valley, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne regions. Visit beautiful local châteaux and domains. Meet the vintners and taste their distinctive wines. Two additional full-day excursions to Châteauneuf du Pape and Bandol.

Certified Oenologue and Sommelier, Jean-Luc Chauvet works as a taster/wine advisor to both restaurants and gourmet magazines.
He selects wines to accompany special menus, designs wine lists, organises and orchestrates the wine cellars of both restaurants and wine merchants, and judges competitive tastings nationwide.
